Why LeBron James chose the number 23 and his desire to retire it league-wide

Date posted: Feb 28, 2010

Quite simply Michael Jordan was LeBron's all-time hero as a growing basketballer. James aspired to Jordan's level so much that it was a natural desire to choose the number 23 as a sophomore and upon entering the NBA straight out of high school.

There is certainly no shortage of sportsmen throughout many sports in this exact same boat - however LeBron is now having second thoughts about his choice.

“I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon. There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn’t Michael Jordan first. He can’t get the logo, and if he can’t, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”

So LeBron is thinking about not only retiring his 23 as part of the Cavs but league-wide out of respect for Michael Jordan and his impact on the game. If he switched he would move to number 6. Plenty of other NBA stars have switched numbers mid career (Jordan, Bryant etc) so its very possible that LeBron will move forward with this idea in the coming years.

As LeBron also features his jersey number as part of his autograph we can only assume any change would also be reflected there. This change could make for some interesting collecting opportunities especially given the level of jersey and auto cards available these days.

We will keep you posted with any news - happy collecting!
